Mathura is where Krishna was born. Vrindavan is where he grew up. Between them sits Braj — a region of temples, ghats and legends so dense you could spend a month and not finish. And once a year, it hosts the most unhinged, joyful Holi on Earth. Here's the guide.
The temples that matter
- Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi (Mathura): the birthplace complex. Busy, security-screened, essential.
- Banke Bihari (Vrindavan): the most beloved temple — the deity is said to be so enchanting the curtain opens and closes constantly so you don't get overwhelmed. Expect crowds and pure devotion.
- ISKCON & Prem Mandir (Vrindavan): the cleaner, grander counterpoints — Prem Mandir's evening light show is genuinely stunning.
- Nidhivan: the mysterious forest where Krishna is believed to still dance at night. No one is allowed after dark.
- Govardhan: the hill Krishna lifted. The 21 km parikrama is the classic Braj pilgrimage.
Braj Holi 2026 — the dates
| Date (2026) | Event | Where |
| 24 Feb | Laddu Holi | Barsana |
| 25 Feb | Lathmar Holi | Barsana |
| 26 Feb | Lathmar Holi | Nandgaon |
| 27 Feb | Phoolon ki Holi | Banke Bihari, Vrindavan |

Lathmar Holi — where the women of Barsana "beat" the men of Nandgaon with sticks — is the one people travel across the world for. Book hotels two months early; Braj fills completely.
2–3 day plan
- Day 1: Mathura — Janmabhoomi, Vishram Ghat, Dwarkadhish temple.
- Day 2: Vrindavan — Banke Bihari (morning, when the curtain opens), ISKCON, Prem Mandir, Nidhivan.
- Day 3: Gokul + Govardhan parikrama (if time) or Barsana.
Practical bits
- From Delhi: ~160 km via the expressway (2.5–3 hrs). From Agra: 1 hr — so it pairs naturally with the Taj Mahal.
- Best time: October–March; Holi season (late Feb–early Mar) if you want the spectacle.
- The Braj 84 Kos Yatra (the full sacred circuit of Krishna's leela sites) is an 8-day undertaking we run as a guided tour.
