Kashmir in spring is a postcard that actually delivers: a mountainside of 1.7 million tulips, a shikara drifting across Dal Lake, and a gondola ride over snow that's still skiing in April. The valley has been on a tourism tear — record footfall in recent years — and the classic Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam circuit is smoother and better run than ever. Here's the plan.
Srinagar (2 days)
- Dal Lake: a shikara ride at sunset, and if your budget allows, one night on a houseboat — it's the Kashmir experience.
- Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden: Asia's largest, ~1.7 million tulips in 70+ varieties. Peak bloom is the first three weeks of April; entry ~₹75.
- Mughal gardens: Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi, plus the old city and Hazratbal shrine.
Gulmarg (1 day)
The Gulmarg Gondola — one of the world's highest cable cars — takes you from green meadow to snow line in two stages. In winter (Dec–Feb) it's a ski resort; in summer it's a flower meadow. Either way, the view shuts everyone up.
Pahalgam & Sonmarg (1–2 days)
- Pahalgam: the Lidder valley — Betaab Valley, pony rides, pine forest. The calmest stop on the circuit.
- Sonmarg: the "meadow of gold", gateway to the Zoji La pass, open roughly April–November.
A 5-day plan
- Day 1: arrive Srinagar — shikara on Dal Lake, houseboat night
- Day 2: tulip garden + Mughal gardens
- Day 3: Gulmarg day trip (gondola)
- Day 4: Pahalgam (Betaab Valley)
- Day 5: Sonmarg or old city, then fly out
Cost reality
- A 5-day package runs ₹11,000–₹22,000 per person depending on hotel class, including houseboat, cab and breakfast/dinner. Flights to Srinagar extra.
- Book early for tulip season (late March–April) — Srinagar fills up.
When to go
- Late March–April: tulips + blossoms (the postcard spring).
- May–September: green valleys, mild weather, the classic summer window.
- December–February: snow, Gulmarg skiing, and frozen Dal Lake sunrises.
