The first time you stand on the White Rann under a full moon, you understand why people pay for a tent in the middle of a salt desert. The salt stretches flat to the horizon in every direction, and when the moon hits it, the ground glows like snow that forgot to be cold. There's nothing else like it in India. Here's the practical stuff nobody puts in the pretty reels.
The dates (write these down)
Official Rann Utsav 2026-27: 1 November 2026 – 7 March 2027 (some operators quote 5 Nov – 4 Mar; the tent city runs ~130 days either way). It's a winter-only festival because the salt desert is unbearable the rest of the year.

What it costs (honest numbers)
The Dhordo Tent City has 400+ tents in three tiers:

Is it worth it? (the real answer)
Yes — if you go on a full moon or an event weekend. Mid-week, non-full-moon dates are much quieter and the magic drops a notch. The festival itself is folk dance, Kutchi music, craft bazaars, camel rides and some of the best regional food you'll eat in Gujarat. Go for 2 nights. One night feels rushed; you spend half of it just checking in and out.
How to reach Dhordo
- By air: Bhuj airport (about 85 km) has connections from Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
- By train: Bhuj railway station, then ~2 hours by road.
- By road: Ahmedabad to Dhordo is roughly 400 km (7–8 hours). Many travellers break it in Bhuj.

What to pack
Days are pleasant (20–28°C) but nights drop to 8–15°C in Dec–Jan. Carry a warm jacket, a shawl, closed shoes (the salt crust is sharp), sunglasses for daytime glare, and moisturiser — the desert air dries your skin fast.
