Before every Char Dham yatra, there's Haridwar. The city where the Ganga leaves the mountains and meets the plains, where the evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri has been drawing crowds for centuries, and where a dip in the river is the ritual that begins the whole pilgrimage. Twenty kilometres north, Rishikesh offers the calmer, more yogic version of the same river. Most people rush through both. Don't.
Haridwar — the aarti and the dip
- Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri: evening (roughly 6–7 PM, seasonal). Hundreds of lamps swing in unison over the river while diyas float downstream. Arrive 45 minutes early, or watch from the opposite bank for a calmer view.
- A dip at Har Ki Pauri — or the quieter ghats nearby — is the classic start to a yatra.
- Mansa Devi & Chandi Devi temples: the two hilltop shrines, reached by cable car (Mansa Devi) — worth it for the view over the city.
- Haridwar is the Char Dham base: almost every Kedarnath / Do Dham / Char Dham package starts here, because it's the last flat railhead before the hills.
Rishikesh — bridges, beats and rafting
- Laxman Jhula & Ram Jhula: the two suspension bridges. Laxman Jhula is the postcard; Ram Jhula has the temple buzz.
- Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat: smaller and more intimate than Haridwar's — many people prefer it.
- River rafting: Sept–June is the season; the 16 km stretch is world-famous. Skip it in monsoon.
- Yoga & cafes: Rishikesh is the "yoga capital of the world" — from hardcore ashrams to acoustic-guitar cafes.
A sensible 2-day plan
- Day 1: Haridwar — Mansa Devi, ghats, evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
- Day 2: Rishikesh — Ram Jhula, Triveni Ghat, rafting (in season), evening aarti at Parmarth — then either head into the hills for your yatra or back to Dehradun/Delhi.
Practical bits
- Getting there: Haridwar Junction (rail) and Jolly Grant airport (Dehradun, ~35 km) serve both. Delhi to Haridwar is 4–5 hrs by road/train.
- Best time: October–March for comfort; the yatra season (Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct) is busiest but most festive.
