Varanasi is not a city you "see". It's a city you stand in — at 5:45 am on a boat as the sun comes up over the ghats, or at dusk watching a hundred lamps swing in unison over the Ganga. It's been lived in for three thousand years, and it still runs on a rhythm older than any monument. Here's the practical guide, updated for 2026.
Day 1 — the river and the temple
- Sunrise boat ride (5:30–6:00 AM): the essential Varanasi experience. ₹250–300 per person on a shared boat; the full 84-ghat stretch in the early light is worth every rupee.
- Kashi Vishwanath Temple: one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, now fronted by the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor — a 400-metre open pathway (with escalators and a 50,000-capacity chowk) that replaced the old congested lanes and links the temple straight to Lalita Ghat. General darshan is free; weekday mornings are quietest. Avoid festival nights (Maha Shivratri means 4–8 hour waits).
- Evening Ganga Aarti (6–7 PM, Dashashwamedh Ghat): the spectacle. Get there 45 minutes early for a good spot, or watch from a boat.
Day 2 — Sarnath and the lanes
- Sarnath: where Buddha gave his first sermon, 10 km out. The Dhamek Stupa and the museum are worth a slow morning.
- BHU campus & New Vishwanath temple: a quieter, grander temple inside Banaras Hindu University.
- The old-city lanes: get lost between the ghats. Banarasi silk, bhang thandai (careful), and the famous kachori-sabzi breakfast.
Practical bits
- Best time: October–March. Summer is brutal; monsoon is humid but atmospheric.
- Getting there: Varanasi (Lal Bahadur Shastri) airport and Varanasi Junction railway station connect everywhere. The city pairs naturally with Ayodhya (4 hrs) and Prayagraj (3 hrs).
- Stay near the ghats or Godowlia if you want the atmosphere; near the station/airport if you want quiet.
- Elderly travellers: the corridor's escalators and wider paths make Kashi Vishwanath far easier than it used to be — the single best accessibility upgrade in Indian pilgrimage.
