At 4 am, in the oldest part of Ujjain, something happens that happens nowhere else in India: the jyotirlinga of Mahakaleshwar is anointed with sacred ash — bhasma — while thousands watch. The Bhasma Aarti is the reason most people come to Ujjain, and it's also the hardest ticket in Hindu pilgrimage: only about 400 online slots a day. Here's how to actually get in.
The timings
- Entry window: ~2:30–3:00 AM (report early; late entry is denied once the ritual starts)
- Aarti: 4:00–6:00 AM
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours
Booking — this is where people lose
- Official site only: shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. No agents, no third-party sites — the temple doesn't allow them, so anyone "selling" you a slot is likely scamming you.
- Regular booking: opens on the 1st of the previous month at 8:00 AM. All July slots open on 1 June, etc. They evaporate within minutes — set an alarm.
- Tatkal booking: opens one day before the date, 8:00 AM. Your fallback if you missed the regular window.
- Price: ₹200 per person (online).
- Carry the same original ID you booked with, plus the printed/QR pass.
Dress code (strict, don't get turned away)
- Men: dhoti, no shirt (for the inner sanctum).
- Women: saree.
If you can't get Bhasma Aarti
Don't despair — the rest of Mahakal is still profound. Regular darshan is free (4 AM–11 PM), and Garbh Griha darshan (₹750 single / ₹1,500 couple, 1–4 PM) gets you close to the lingam. Mondays and the month of Shravan are the busiest; weekdays in off-season are calmest.
