In early 2025, the world watched Prayagraj host the largest gathering in human history: the Maha Kumbh, where 66 crore people took a dip at the Triveni Sangam over 45 days — a single-day record of 8 crore on Mauni Amavasya. The tents are gone now, but the Sangam is still there, still sacred, and far easier to visit. Here's how.
The Sangam (how to actually do it)
The confluence point sits out on the river. You take a boat (₹100–300 per person, negotiate) from the ghats near the fort to the sandbank where the two visible rivers meet — the Ganga's grey-green water meeting the Yamuna's bluer flow is genuinely visible on a clear day. A dip here, at the sangam, is the whole point for most pilgrims.
Around it: the Akshayavat (the immortal banyan inside the fort), the Bade Hanuman temple, and the new Sangam corridor that has made access dramatically easier than pre-Kumbh.
What else to see
- Anand Bhavan & Swaraj Bhavan — the Nehru family homes, now museums. The best history stop in the city.
- Allahabad Fort (partially open) and the Khusro Bagh tombs.
- Kumbh Museum — if the Kumbh's scale fascinated you, this tells its story.

A 1-day Prayagraj plan
Morning: boat to the Sangam + dip → Akshayavat & fort → lunch → Anand Bhavan → evening at the ghats. That's a full day. Prayagraj is the natural midpoint of the Ayodhya–Varanasi corridor (3 hrs from Varanasi, 3.5 from Ayodhya), so it slots perfectly into a 6-day UP circuit.
