Two of the most beautiful things in India are hiding in north Gujarat, about two hours from Ahmedabad, and almost nobody visits them. Rani ki Vav — a stepwell so sculpted it feels like a temple turned inside out — and the Modhera Sun Temple, still catching the first light of the equinox a thousand years after it was built. If you do one heritage day in Gujarat, make it this one.
Rani ki Vav (Patan)
Built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband, this isn't a "well" in the way you imagine. It's an inverted temple: seven levels descending into the earth, every wall and pillar covered in carvings — deities, apsaras, and at the deepest level, Lord Vishnu reclining on the serpent Shesha. It was buried in silt for centuries, which is why the carvings survive so sharply today.
You've probably already seen it: it's on the ₹100 note.
- Timings: 8 am–6 pm. Entry: ~₹40 for Indians.
- Best light: morning, when the sun rakes across the carvings.
Modhera Sun Temple
About 35 km from Patan, built around 1026 CE by the Solanki dynasty. Dedicated to Surya, the sun god, and designed so the first rays of the equinox fall on the sanctum. The Surya Kund — the step-tank in front — has 108 miniature shrines, one of those details you have to see to believe.
- If you can time it, the Modhera Dance Festival (usually January) stages classical dance against the lit temple at night. It's one of Gujarat's best cultural events.
- Entry: ~₹35 for Indians.
How to do both in a day
```
Ahmedabad → Modhera (~100 km, 2–2.5 hrs) → Patan/Rani ki Vav (~35 km) → Ahmedabad
```
Start early, do Modhera in the morning, lunch in Patan, Rani ki Vav in the afternoon light, and you're back in Ahmedabad by evening. If you're interested in textiles, Patan is also home of the famous patola silk weaving — the double-ikat saris that take months to make.
Combine with your route
These two fit naturally onto the front or back of any Gujarat trip that touches Ahmedabad — most people bolt them onto a Statue of Unity or Kutch itinerary. Ask us to add a heritage day; it's the best two hours of driving you'll spend.
