Kedarnath is the one that stays with you. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, sitting at 3,583 metres in a valley that feels like the end of the world, reached only by a 16-kilometre walk (or a pony, or a helicopter). It's also the most logistically confusing dham if you've never done it. This guide removes the guesswork.
The 2026 dates
- Opening: 22 April 2026, 8:00 AM (announced on Mahashivratri)
- Closing: 11 November 2026 (tentative)
- The Panchamukhi Bhogmurti procession travels from Ukhimath to Kedarnath over 17β21 April before the doors open β if you're around, it's a moving sight.
The trek (know what you're signing up for)
Gaurikund β Kedarnath: 16 km. It takes 6β9 hours on foot, climbing steadily beside the Mandakini. The path is well-built but high and relentless β this is not a walk in the park.
Your options:
- On foot: best if you're fit. Start before dawn, carry water and a stick.
- Pony/ghoda: ~βΉ2,500ββΉ4,000 depending on the season. For most middle-aged pilgrims, this is the sweet spot.
- Palki/doli: carried by porters, ~βΉ4,000ββΉ6,000. Good for seniors who want to avoid a horse.
- Helicopter: from Guptkashi, Phata or Sirsi, ~βΉ7,000ββΉ8,000 round trip. Lands near the temple; a short walk remains. Book days ahead in peak season.
How to reach
- Fly: Dehradun (Jolly Grant) is the nearest airport.
- Train: Haridwar or Rishikesh are the railheads.
- Road: Haridwar β Guptkashi β Sonprayag (about 8β9 hours); then a 5 km shuttle to Gaurikund and the trek begins.
- From Delhi: a 6D/5N trip works; from Haridwar, 4D/3N.
What it costs
A 4D/3N Kedarnath package from Haridwar starts around βΉ9,700 per person; from Delhi around βΉ15,800. Add pony/palki/helicopter on top. Budget βΉ12,000ββΉ18,000 all-in for a comfortable first trip.
Honest tips
- MayβJune and SeptβOct are the season. JulyβAugust is monsoon β the yatra runs but landslides can close roads for days. Don't plan a tight schedule in July.
- Overnight at Kedarnath if you can β the early morning darshan before the crowds is the best moment of the whole yatra. Book the basic GMVN/ashram rooms early.
- Warm layers even in summer; it's cold up there. And carry your registration slip + ID at every checkpoint.
- Acclimatise β don't fly in and trek the same day if you're from sea level. One night in Guptkashi first makes a real difference.
