Ask most people what Gujarat looks like and they'll say desert. They're half right — Kutch is desert. But drive south in July and you'll think you took a wrong turn into a rainforest. The monsoon transforms the Dang district, Saputara and the forests around the Narmada into the greenest place in western India, complete with waterfalls that only exist for three months a year. It's the state's best-kept seasonal secret.
Where it's actually green (and where it isn't)
Go here in monsoon:
- Saputara — mist, cloud-filled valleys, and hills so green they look fake. The ropeway may pause in heavy rain, so check the sky.
- Gira Falls — the largest waterfall in Gujarat, about 50 km from Saputara. July–August is peak flow. This is the single reason many people make the trip.
- Polo Forest — near Ahmedabad's edge of the Aravallis: ruined temples, a river, and dense jungle. A 2.5-hour drive from Ahmedabad and perfect in rain.
- The Dang district — winding roads through bamboo forests, tribal villages, dozens of unnamed seasonal falls.
- Zarwani Falls — inside the Statue of Unity's Shoolpaneshwar sanctuary. Combines a waterfall with the monument.
Skip in monsoon: Kutch (hot, humid, and the Rann is off-limits), and note that Gir's core safari zones close mid-June to mid-October — the Devaliya Safari Park stays open if you still want lions.
The monsoon reality check (be honest with yourself)
- Roads can be slick, and some forest routes close after heavy rain. Drive carefully, leave buffer time.
- Humidity is real — pack light cotton, quick-dry clothes and a rain jacket.
- Waterfalls are at their best *during* and just *after* rain, not two weeks later — check recent rainfall before you go.
- Room prices are lower than winter, and the crowds are a fraction. That's the trade you're making: greener, cheaper, emptier, wetter.
A good 2-day monsoon plan
- Day 1: Drive to Saputara (from Mumbai/Surat), lake + Artist Village in the rain, overnight.
- Day 2: Gira Falls early (best flow and light), then home — or extend a day to Polo Forest.
