Gir is the only place on Earth where Asiatic lions still live in the wild. Every single one of them — 600-plus, according to the last census, up from a terrifying low of about 180 in 1974 — lives here, in 1,400 square kilometres of dry teak forest in Saurashtra. A safari here is not like Ranthambore or Kanha. It's quieter, cheaper, and in the right season, the sightings are astonishingly reliable.
The two safari zones (know the difference)
- Core Gir safari (Sasan Gir): the full experience — permits are limited and book out fast in winter. You must reserve through the official forest department portal, ideally 60–90 days ahead for Dec–Feb.
- Devaliya Safari Park (Gir Interpretation Zone): a fenced 4 sq km area with a near-guaranteed sighting in 40 minutes. Bookable on the spot, cheaper, and — importantly — it stays open during the monsoon when the core park is closed. If you're in Gujarat June–October, this is your only lion option.

The honest take: December to March is the sweet spot for most people — pleasant weather and very high sighting odds. Serious photographers swear by April–May, when thinning forest and shrinking waterholes concentrate the cats.
Safari timings & cost
- Morning safari: ~6:00–9:30 am (timings shift a little by season)
- Evening safari: ~3:00–6:00 pm
- Cost: about ₹800 per Indian adult including guide and jeep (foreign nationals pay more). Morning slots are marginally better for lions; evening light is better for photos.
Booking tips that actually matter
1. Book permits the moment your dates are fixed in winter — they genuinely sell out.
2. Book both morning and evening safaris if you can; one bad morning is common.
3. Ask your lodge which routes had sightings that morning — guides share this.
4. Carry binoculars, plain-coloured clothes (no bright red), and silence your phone.
