Most Indians have never heard of Saputara, which is exactly its charm. Gujarat's one and only hill station sits at 1,000 metres in the Sahyadris, on the Maharashtra border, and it stays stubbornly low-key while the famous hill stations drown in traffic. If you're in Gujarat (or Mumbai) and want green hills, mist and a lake without the Nainital crowds, this is it.
What to do there
1. Saputara Lake + boating. The town's centrepiece. Pedal boats, calm water, gardens around it. Do this at sunset.
2. The ropeway. A short cable-car ride up to Sunset Point (Gandhi Shikhar) — the best view in town, and genuinely fun for kids.
3. Sunset & Sunrise points. Walk up early for the sunrise if you can manage it; the valley fills with cloud in monsoon.
4. Artist Village (Gandharvapur). The tribal communities of the Dang district — Warli art, bamboo craft, jewellery. You can try your hand at it and buy directly from the makers.
5. Tribal Museum. Small, but it explains the Dang tribes properly — worth 30 minutes.
6. Gira Falls. About 50 km away, and it's the largest waterfall in Gujarat. In monsoon it's the reason to come; in summer it's a trickle.
7. Hatgad Fort. A 6 km trek for a view over the Maharashtra-Gujarat border.
Best time to visit
- September–March: the main season. Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) is the sweet spot — everything still green, skies clear, pleasant days.
- July–August (monsoon): the greenest, most dramatic version of Saputara. Waterfalls roar, mist rolls through the valley. Downside: heavy rain can pause the ropeway and fog out the viewpoints.
- April–June: the summer escape for Gujarat families, warmer than the coast but fine at altitude.
How to reach
- From Surat: ~156 km (3–3.5 hours). The most common route.
- From Mumbai: ~250 km via Nashik (about 5–6 hours). Break at Waghai to see Gira Falls on the way.
- From Nashik: ~79 km — the shortest gateway.
- Nearest station: Waghai (~50 km); nearest airport: Surat.

Families wanting a quick, easy hill break; couples after a quiet weekend; anyone in Surat/Mumbai/Vadodara who wants cooler air without a flight. It's not a big-hotel luxury destination — it's a small, friendly, honest hill town. That's the appeal.
