Two of the holiest places in western India sit barely 230 km apart: Dwarka, the city of Lord Krishna, and Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Do them together and you've got the classic Saurashtra pilgrimage — short, spiritually heavy, and surprisingly easy to travel. Here's how to do it properly.
The 4-day itinerary that works
Day 1 — Arrive Dwarka. Check in, then evening darshan at Dwarkadhish and the Gomti Ghat aarti. Sunset at the ghat is the moment most people remember.
Day 2 — Bet Dwarka + Nageshwar. Bet Dwarka is a 30-minute boat ride to the island where Krishna is said to have lived. Go early, before the queues. On the way back, stop at Nageshwar Jyotirlinga and Rukmini Devi temple. Sudama Setu (the cable-stayed bridge) is worth the short walk at dusk.
Day 3 — Dwarka to Somnath via Porbandar. Porbandar is on the route, so you can see Kirti Mandir, Gandhi's birthplace. Reach Somnath by evening for the 7 pm aarti and the 8 pm light & sound show — the show tells the temple's history of being destroyed and rebuilt, and it's the best 45 minutes of the trip.
Day 4 — Somnath morning, then out. Morning darshan at Somnath (6–8 am is the quietest), Bhalka Tirth (where Krishna is believed to have left his mortal body) and Triveni Sangam, then head home — or extend to Gir or Diu if you have a day to spare.
Temple timings you'll actually need
Dwarkadhish Temple: open 6:30 am–12:30 pm and 5:00–9:30 pm. Mangla aarti 6:30 am, Shringar aarti 10:30 am, Sandhya aarti 7:30 pm. It closes for the afternoon (1–5 pm) — don't show up at 2 pm expecting darshan, it's locked.
Somnath Temple: open 6:00 am–10:00 pm. Aartis at 7 am, 12 noon and 7 pm. Light & sound show 8–9 pm (skipped in monsoon).
How to reach
- By train: Dwarka has its own station on the Okha line, with direct trains from Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Somnath's nearest station is Veraval (7 km), linked from Ahmedabad and Rajkot.
- By air: Porbandar (~105 km from Dwarka) or Jamnagar (~140 km) are the closest airports. Most pilgrims fly into Ahmedabad or Rajkot and drive.
- By road: Ahmedabad–Dwarka is about 440 km (8 hours); Dwarka–Somnath via Porbandar is 230 km (4–5 hours).
What a good package should include

Travel tips
- Dress conservatively at both temples; phones and leather items go in lockers at Dwarkadhish.
- Mornings (6–8 am) are dramatically less crowded at both temples.
- Best season: October to March. Avoid May–June unless you enjoy 40°C.
