Diu is what people mean when they say they want "old Goa without the Goa". It's a tiny island off Saurashtra's south coast — a Portuguese fort, sea-facing churches, one genuinely lovely beach, and a pace of life that runs about 40% slower than anywhere else in Gujarat. It's not a party destination. It's a decompress destination.
What to do (it's a short list — that's the point)
1. Nagoa Beach — the main beach. Clean-ish sand, gentle waves, water sports in season, hammocks and coconut water.
2. Diu Fort — a 16th-century Portuguese fortress with cannons, sea walls and a lighthouse view. Go at sunset.
3. St. Paul's Church — baroque, whitewashed, 400+ years old. Beautiful and nearly always empty.
4. Naida Caves — strange, photogenic rock formations just outside the fort.
5. Gangeshwar Temple — five Shiva lingas washed by sea waves at high tide. Unusual and worth a stop.
6. INS Khukri memorial — a moving naval memorial. Ten minutes.
How Diu fits into a Gujarat trip
Diu's sweet spot is as a 2-day add-on, not a destination of its own:
- Diu + Gir: Gir is only about 2 hours away. Safari in the morning, beach by afternoon.
- Dwarka–Somnath–Diu: the classic Saurashtra circuit — temples, then beach. This is our best-selling Gujarat route.
Standalone, two days is plenty. Three if you just want to do nothing, which is valid.
How to reach
- By air: Diu airport has flights from Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
- By train: Veraval (Somnath's station) is the nearest major railhead, about 90 km.
- By road: 2 hours from Gir, 4–5 from Somnath, ~8 from Ahmedabad.
Best time & practical bits
November to February — dry, 20–30°C, seas calm. Avoid May–June (very hot) and the monsoon months when the sea turns rough. Note Diu was historically a separate union territory now merged into Daman & Diu administration; alcohol rules differ from mainland Gujarat, which is part of why some travellers stop here — but most come for the quiet.
