Gujarat doesn't have one best season. It has about four different "bests" depending on what you came for. Want the salt desert? Winter. Want lions? Summer, weirdly. Want green hills and waterfalls? Monsoon. Want to dance? October. Here's the month-by-month truth, with no tour-operator sugar-coating.
October–March: the main season (and why)
This is when Gujarat shows off. Days hover 20–28°C, nights are cool, and every major attraction is open.
- Rann Utsav runs November to March — the White Rann is only comfortable (and only decorated) in these months.
- Gir National Park is open from mid-October, and December–February is the most pleasant safari weather.
- Dwarka–Somnath pilgrimage peaks, with big crowds around Diwali and full-moon dates.
- Navratri (11–19 October 2026) kicks the season off with nine nights of garba.
Crowds and prices peak in December, especially Christmas–New Year. Book Rann Utsav tents and Gir permits 2–3 months ahead for that window.
November vs February — the two sweet spots
November is the gentlest month: everything's open, weather's mild, and the December rush hasn't hit. February is the mirror image — post-peak, warm days, cheaper rooms, and the Rann Utsav still running until early March. If I had to pick two months for a first-timer, it's these.
April–June: hot, but the lions love it
Summer means 35–42°C in Saurashtra and Kutch. Most travellers stay away — and that's exactly why wildlife people go. April and May are the best months for Gir lion sightings, because animals crowd the shrinking waterholes. Saputara (at 1,000 m) stays pleasantish and is the classic summer escape for Gujarat families. Skip Kutch entirely; the Rann is a furnace.
July–September: monsoon — underrated, with a catch
The catch: Gir's core zones close mid-June to mid-October (Devaliya Safari Park stays open), and humidity in Ahmedabad is real. The payoff: South Gujarat turns electric green — Saputara, Gira Falls (the biggest waterfall in the state), Polo Forest, and the Dang district are at their most beautiful. If you chase waterfalls, this is your season.
