Most people think Gujarat is "that state with the Statue of Unity". Seven days here will fix that assumption. In one week you can do the world's tallest statue, two of Hinduism's holiest temples, a lion safari, and end on a beach. Here's the route that wastes the least time in a car.
The route (a loop, not a zigzag)

This is the classic Saurashtra loop. It runs roughly clockwise and avoids backtracking, which is the single biggest mistake in most DIY Gujarat plans.
Day-by-day
Day 1 — Ahmedabad. Fly in, settle, and do the evening: Sabarmati Ashram, then dinner at Manek Chowk. Don't over-plan day one; you've got driving ahead.
Day 2 — Statue of Unity (drive 3–3.5 hrs). Leave early, do the viewing gallery + Valley of Flowers + the laser show. Overnight at Kevadia or drive on to Vadodara.
Day 3 — Vadodara → Dwarka (long drive, ~7 hrs). Get an early start. Evening darshan at Dwarkadhish and Gomti Ghat aarti.
Day 4 — Bet Dwarka + Nageshwar, then Somnath (4–5 hrs). Morning boat to Bet Dwarka, quick stop at Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, then drive to Somnath for the 7 pm aarti and 8 pm light & sound show. This is the best evening of the trip.
Day 5 — Somnath morning, then Gir (2–2.5 hrs). Dawn darshan at Somnath (quietest), Bhalka Tirth, then to Sasan Gir for an afternoon safari.
Day 6 — Gir → Diu (2 hrs). Optional morning safari if you're a wildlife person, otherwise drive to Diu and do nothing on Nagoa beach. You've earned it.
Day 7 — Diu → Ahmedabad (7 hrs) or fly from Diu. Diu has an airport with connections to Mumbai and Ahmedabad — worth the small premium over 7 hours in a car.

Add Rann of Kutch? (think twice)
Kutch sits far north-west, so adding it means dropping Gir or Diu and adding a full day of driving. If the Rann Utsav is running (Nov–Mar) and it's on your bucket list, do Kutch as a separate 3–4 day trip. Trying to squeeze both Saurashtra and Kutch into one week is how you end up seeing everything from a car window.
Practical tips
- Oct–Mar is the season for this loop; skip it May–June unless you love heat.
- Book Gir permits early in winter — they sell out.
- Carry cash for temple lockers and small towns; UPI works almost everywhere now.
- Satvik meal preference? Tell your hotel/operator the day before — Gujarat kitchens handle this beautifully.
